About

About EvidenceShelf

Self-help is one of the best-selling sections of any bookstore, and one of the least checked. Books promise to rewire your habits, your mindset or your brain, often citing a handful of studies that later failed to replicate, or none at all.

EvidenceShelf exists to answer one question before you spend your money and your time: does what this book teaches hold up?

What we do

For every book, we identify its central claims, look for the best available research on each one (meta-analyses and large replications first), and give the book an Evidence Score from 0 to 10. Every review lists its sources so you can check our work.

We are not here to dunk on authors. Plenty of books with modest scores still contain useful ideas, and we say so. When a book scores low, we point you to better-supported alternatives on the same topic.

How we work

EvidenceShelf is run by a small independent editorial team. Reviews are researched and drafted with the help of AI tools, then every cited study is checked against its original source before publication. We update reviews when new research changes the picture, and each page shows the date of its last revision.

Independence

We are not affiliated with any author or publisher, and we do not accept payment or free copies in exchange for coverage. The site is funded by affiliate links, as explained in our affiliate disclosure.
